4.4i
| | Model of the car: | 4.4i | | | General comments: | Took delivery of the car in July 2000 -- a 2001 model year. Since then about 17,000 miles.
This is one seriously fast car. Never mind the SAV bit. The Boston toll-booth tango is usually sorted out in the first 50 yards -- only full-on sports cars can give me a run for it, and then they have to wind it out. And, for you that have not yet had the chance, it gets faster as the engine loosens up. I guesstimate somewhere in the 6.5-6.7 0-60 range.
Yet, it demands a lot to drive it. It is not a cruising machine -- even the 540 is an easier drive. But there is sort of an invincibility thing happening: foot deep snow was a piece of cake; slippery hillsides that had other "4-wheel drive" vehicles slithering about were accomplished with no fuss.
Now how about the new 4.4 engine in this? Or the M5's powerplant? | | | What things have gone wrong with the car: | Negatives: lousy gas milage (particulaly how I drive). BMW service act like they are doing YOU a favor by servicing the car -- then they screw up the service. Large blind spots. Sheer bulk -- it actually feels larger than it is. The off-road capability is probably more than you'd want to try out: your teeth may fall out before the car gives up. | | | Previous car: | MDX; Disco II; Land Cruiser. |
